  • Thanks for the review – I’ve been thinking about getting that one as well.

  • Dear Sam.
Thank you for the review. It was really helpful since I am in the process of getting a second (smaller) bag next to my Domke F6. Do you know anything about the smaller Retrospective 10?

  • Mine arrives (I hope!) this week some time!! Can’t wait. Thanks for the review, Sam (I had wondered about the whole iPad fitting!)

the retrospective 10 is same material and design thought, but won’t hold a 70-200 2.8 while on camera body and has a smaller width which restricts your ability to carry another flash or something that size. it will hold a gripped camera easily just like the 20, which was the most essential thing for me though!

    you’re welcome everyone! i can’t recommend thinktankphoto.com enough!

  • Thanks Sam!
Great video and we appreciate the in-depth review. The Retro 10 is actually the same width as the 20 but just 2″ shorter so you are exactly right that it won’t hold the 70-200 attached to a body. The 30 is the same height as the 10 but it’s wider to accommodate 2 bodies with lenses attached.
Thanks again and please let us know if you have any further questions!

oops, thanks for the clarification chris. i haven’t used the retrospective 10 yet. if you don’t need a 70-200 2.8 attached then it sounds like it’s the bag for you Jan!

  • Great review Sam.
Been looking at this bag myself.

  • Wow this is a great resource.. I’m enjoying it.. good article

  • Hi Sam,

Thanks for the review – that was just what I was looking for, I had been thinking about these new bags and wanted something just like you did to replace my UD.

    Love your site btw…

    Cheers.

Thx Sam for the excellent review-curious, since I shoot with a d3 series body as you, the d3+70-200 vr2 fits into the retro-20 no problems?
I use either my domke f3x or lowepro toploader for that setup, but then I’m forced to keep the 24-70 and 50 1.4 out of the bag-not fun for weddings!

    • Sam

yup! it fits with the 70-200 no problem

  • I’ve got the Retro 10 and love it! I have the 80-200/2.8, which is notably shorter than the 70-200 models, and it fits just fine, even mounted. One small detraction would be that small (non 1.4) prime lenses tend to swim around in these bags. I’d love to see a better divider system that facilitates stacking of small lenses.
