Create Impossible Ultra-Wide Photos // tutorial video & article

Join me on the journey this photo took from this:

To this:

Now, the video explains it pretty thoroughly (and it’s quick!), but just to break it down for you anti-video folks…

The original image was largely a silhouette in camera, and I simply edited the shadows to be slightly darker using the shadows slider and the rest was done using Gainstage from signal flow.

This is the final RAW file edit:

Looks pretty good to be honest, but I captured a LOT of images with these two around the crowds and tall buildings all day so, I wanted one image where they were more isolated as a couple. Many photographers might reach for the clone tool to work on some fancy brushing away of the buildings etc, but a method I greatly prefer is the free transform tool.

In photoshop, use the selection tool and grab a side of your frame like this:

Right or control click and select “free transform”

Click, and drag. You might have to hold shift while dragging if it’s enlarging the whole box… make sure it’s just stretching in one direction:

Do the other side, and done:

I don’t use the technique often, but you better believe it’s extremely effective at not only quickly getting rid of distracting elements, but crafting an impossibly wide perspective.

Here are some more examples of when I’ve used this exact technique over the years:

The attached video goes though another example for you so give it a watch and let me know any thoughts or questions!

I’ve also attached a file to this post so you can practice if you don’t have your own yet!
